This inaugural post of my new blog, which is just one of the exciting changes coming to Nebraska Booze N Babel (NBNB) this season, I will be giving a little history about myself and what you can expect from this blog. Each post to the blog will cover many topics that will hopefully interest and in some instances educate those of you reading it. If there is ever a topic you want me to cover or question you have, feel free to comment on one of our social media platforms or email me at mixologist@nbnb.rocks.
For those new to NBNB my name is Roy and I have over 30 years of experience making drinks. I have never been officially trained nor worked professionally in the industry. I have however been experimenting with flavor combinations by tweaking classic recipes and creating brand new drinks for family and friends as well as a few local drink contests (where I have done well) for a very long time. My personal home bar has over 50 different liquors and a fridge with many mixers as you never know what you may feel like making. I always like finding new bottles of liquors so I can see what great drinks I can make with them. I also like to infuse my own alcohols but I will write more on that later.
Like many mixologists I pride myself on my ability to tailor drinks to the person I am making them for. I am probably most known for being able to make very strong drinks that you can not taste the alcohol in. I have always felt taste is the most important aspect of a drink but now that I am more active on social media I have been working on getting better at presentation since a great picture is many times how people judge the drinks. Personally though I will take a better tasting drink over a pretty drink any day. Here are a few other quick facts that hopefully will help you get to know me better as a mixologist.
Favorite classic cocktail: Old Fashioned (though I do like to make many variations)
Favorite frozen cocktail: Dirty Monkey (Extra banana for me!)
Red or White wine: Generally sweet reds are my favorite but I have a wide variety I will drink including some Moscatos and Rieslings in the whites.
Martini: Vodka, Extra Dirty, Shaken not stirred just like Mr 007.
Favorite Shot: A bomb shot I make using chilled pineapple vodka and the Monster Zero Ultra in a bomb glass.
Scotch: The less peaty the better for me. My go to is Glenfiddich 12yr.
Great Straight: William Wolf Pecan Bourbon (If you haven't had it, go get it. I mean now!)
I hope this first blog entry let you get to know me a bit better and I really hope you check out my upcoming three part series where I will discuss the basics of building a home bar. I will cover what liquors, tools, and glassware you should start with for a basic bar and then where to focus first as you continue to build out a bar that will become the envy of all your friends.
Until next time....Cheers
